Taliban name new Afghan government, interior minister on U.S. sanctions list
On Tuesday, the Taliban chose from its own ranks to fill top posts in Afghanistan's new government, selecting an associate of the militant group's founder as the premier and a person on the U.S. terrorism list as interior minister. International powers have urged the Taliban to form an inclusive government that respects human rights and upholds its promises of a more conciliatory approach, in contrast to its oppressive rule during its 1996-2001 period in power. In his first public statement since the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, Haibatullah Akhundzada, the group's supreme leader, declared that the Taliban would abide by all international laws, treaties, and commitments that are not in conflict with Islamic law.0
