Partial refloating of jammed ship lifts hopes of reopening Suez Canal
A 400-metre (430-yard) long container ship that had been blocking Egypt's Suez Canal for nearly a week was partially refloated on Monday, according to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). This has raised hopes that the busy waterway will soon be reopened, allowing the backlog of ships to pass through. The Ever Given became stuck diagonally across a southern section of the canal last Tuesday due to high winds. Rescue workers from the SCA and a team from Dutch firm Smit Salvage used tug boats to try and free the vessel in the early hours of Monday, two marine and shipping sources said. After further dredging and excavation over the weekend, the ship was partially refloated.0
