Nearly 90 countries join pact to slash planet-warming methane emissions
Nearly 90 countries have signed onto a U.S.- and EU-led initiative to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels, in an effort to combat one of the primary contributors to climate change, according to a senior Biden administration official. The partnership will be officially unveiled later today. Methane is the second most powerful greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, and has a higher capacity for trapping heat than CO2, but dissipates more quickly in the atmosphere. Reducing methane emissions can therefore have a rapid effect on curbing global warming.0
