NASA begins process of bringing new space telescope into focus
On Wednesday, NASA began the laborious process of bringing the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope into focus. The mission control engineers at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, sent their initial commands to the small motors that will adjust the telescope's main mirror. This mirror is made up of 18 hexagonal segments of gold-plated beryllium metal and is 21 feet 4 inches (6.5 m) in diameter, which is much larger than the Hubble Space Telescope's light-collecting surface. If all goes according to plan, the telescope should be ready to start observing the cosmos by early summer.0
