Model soldiers and secret bunkers on Taiwan’s front line with China
Chen Ing-wen, who served in the military on Kinmen from 1991 to 1993, recalls standing on a rocky outcrop 3 km (1.9 miles) from China's coast and shooting at Chinese trawlers that got too close. He clarifies that the shots were meant to scare, not kill, the fishermen. Kinmen is a reminder of the Cold War, as it was the site of major fighting between Taiwan and China in 1958.
