Magic mushroom compound at least as good as antidepressant in UK study
A British study has found that psilocybin, the psychedelic active compound in magic mushrooms, may be at least as effective as a leading antidepressant drug in helping patients into remission from severe depression. The research, which was the first to compare psilocybin therapy and the antidepressant escitalopram, suggests that the psychoactive ingredient has potential as a mental health treatment. According to Robin Carhart-Harris, the head of the centre for psychedelic research at Imperial College London who designed and led the study, the remission rates were twice as high in the psilocybin group than the escitalopram group.0
