A cold breeze blows across the Taiwan Strait as a small group of Taiwanese marines shiver on a dock in the early morning, their shorts and light jackets soaked from a day spent mostly in the water. “Are you a sleeping beauty? Are you skipping out on class?” a trainer yells at the thin men, who have had little sleep in days, as they do sit-ups and other exercises on the hard concrete ground, some of them drifting in and out of sleepiness due to exhaustion.
