Drone footage shows offshore and onshore mining at Indonesia’s ‘tin island’
Drone footage reveals that, as their resources become increasingly scarce, Indonesian tin miners have extended their operations from Bangka Island to offshore pontoons. Diesel generators are producing black smoke as steel pipes are driven into the seabed to extract sand, which is then screened for tin ore. An environmental organization has warned that this practice is endangering the biodiversity of nearby coasts, and fishermen have complained that their catches have decreased as a result.0
