On Thursday, countries such as Poland, Vietnam, and Chile will pledge to phase out coal-fuelled power generation and stop building new plants. This agreement, which is being hosted by the British government at the COP26 summit, will commit 190 nations and organisations to quitting the use of coal. Burning coal is the most polluting fossil fuel and is the single biggest contributor to climate change, so phasing out its use is essential to reach global climate targets. Signatories of the COP26 agreement will commit to not investing in new coal plants, and to phasing out coal-fuelled power generation in the 2030s for richer countries and the 2040s for poorer nations.0
